Leigh forwards Jonny Walker and Richard Beaumont have gone to Whitehaven on a month’s loan.

Walker joined the Centurions following his release by Hull KR towards the end of the 2014 season and made his debut on Heritage Day against Workington Town, going on to feature in the Grand Final victory over Featherstone Rovers.

He ended the season in style with his late try at Gala against France securing Scotland the European Championship title and has made three first team appearances for Leigh this season.

Bradford born, Walker started off in the Academy ranks at Bradford Bulls and made 48 Super League appearances for Castleford Tigers between 2010-13, scoring four tries and also made his Scotland debut in 2012.

Leigh Centurions head of rugby Derek Beaumont said: “Jonny is a great lad - it’s important that we find the right level of competitive fixture for all our players. You cannot win championships with a bare squad and must have strength in depth and unfortunately it makes it hard for players to break in from our reserves.

“Jonny is a Super League player and it is a mark of our squad that we have players of his standard out of the team. Whitehaven are a good club and Barry Richardson treats players very well. Jonny will be a significant addition to what (head coach) James Coyle is trying to achieve and Jonny is relishing the challenge to get some consistent game time to regain that sharpness that puts him at the top of his game.

“He is a no-nonsense runner with a big hit and I am sure the Haven fans will take to his no-nonsense approach and embrace him like our fans have. We have an option to extend Jonny next year and it is important he has the game time at the right level to enable him to earn that. He is very positive and clear on what we want him to go and do and he is relishing the challenge which starts with Featherstone.”

Richard Beaumont joined the Centurions after his release by St Helens at the end of last season. Born in Hull he came through the junior ranks to make his Super League debut with Hull KR in 2011 before moving to Saints at the end of the 2013 season.

Beaumont, who has yet to make his first team debut for the Centurions has recently been on loan at Kingstone Press Championship One club Rochdale Hornets.
