Former Leigh forward Tyrone McCarthy is heading for Australia’s NRL.

The Hull KR captain will return to Australia at the end of the year after agreeing a two-year contract with St George Illawarra Dragons where Ian Millward is the assistant coach.

The 27-year-old has spent only one season with the Robins after joining from Queensland Cup club Northern Pride but has done enough during his short time at the KC Lightstream Stadium to earn the chance to play first-grade rugby league Down Under.

McCarthy led Rovers into last month’s Challenge Cup final against Leeds and has been one of the stand-out players for Chris Chester’s side in 2015.

He played 18 times for Leigh between 2010 and 2011 while on dual registration from Warrington Wolves. McCarthy will link up with his former Warrington team-mate Mike Cooper at the Dragons.
