Local youngsters from the Astley and Tyldesley area were in action in Exeter in the second round of the British Youth National championships in cycle speedway.

First up, in the Under-10s, was eight-year-old Thomas Whitwam. Tom finished second for the B final after a win and three second places in his qualifying heats. Next up was Adam Turnbull in the Under-12s. In his qualifying heats, Adam earned 12 points to get to the C final, where his determined effort in a race full of crashes saw him finish in third place overall.

In the Under-14s, Adam Watson blitzed the opposition in his heats to qualify for the A final, where he made light work of the opposition, winning by a third of a lap.

Finally, the only girl representative from the region, Laura Watson, 17, qualified for the B final, where she finished second overall.

There are two more rounds in the British Youth Nationals, at Sheffield and Norwich.
