Rylands u18s 18 Leigh Miners u18s 14
The game started well for the visitors as centre Ryan Ravenscroft came from deep in his own 20 metre area, fending off tacklers with his trademark hand-off to provide good field position in Rylands’ half. A swift handling move was followed by a smart pass inside from James Bourke to Adam Tustin, who scored under the sticks in the fourth minute, converted by Ward.
In the 18th minute a piece of individual brilliance and great footwork by LMR half back Josh Ward saw him waltz through the defensive line on his own 30 metre line, beat the full back and outpace his pursuers for 70 metres to score by the posts and then cooly convert his own try to put LMR up by 12 points to nil.
Rylands’ scored out wide on the left wing just as the half ended, converted to give a scoreline of 6-12 to the visitors.
In the second half LMR gave away possession through errors and allowed Rylands pack to drive up field. LMR had a period of sustained pressure in the opposition’s 20 metre area and after a penalty was awarded, Josh Ward placed a further two points on the board which meant the home side now had to score twice to win.
Rylands never gave up and forced the ball out wide to their left centre and the loose forward scored under the sticks. After conversion the score was now 12-14 still in LMR favour.
With 10 minutes to go, the game was tense and Rylands now desperate for the win heaped on the pressure. Three minutes from time another ball handling error from LMR allowed Rylands possession and they scored out wide to win the game.
