THE new year begins with a bang at Leigh Sports Village as the stadium enters one of the biggest and busiest sporting months in its history.

After the success of the pre-season friendly between Leigh Centurions and Wigan Warriors on Sunday, where 4,125 watched Centurions overcome the Super League Grand Finalists 18-14, Leigh play their second warm-up game this Sunday against North Wales Crusaders.

Then, on Monday January 26, it’s Manchester United U21s’ biggest game of the season, as they take on rivals Liverpool at LSV. As usual, tickets for United matches are absolutely free and this is a great chance to see United and Liverpool’s very best young talent.

In fact, United’s game against Liverpool is the first of four consecutive Mondays on which they will play their U21 games at Leigh Sports Village. On February 2 they take on Fulham, while on February 9 it’s another big game for Warren Joyce’s men as Chelsea are the visitors. And February 16th sees another team from Merseyside make the short trip down the East Lancs as Everton round off an attractive series of games.

“When we agreed to host Manchester United U21s at Leigh Sports Village, we knew that we’d be bringing some big games to Leigh,” said LSV Chief Executive Simon Toon. “But to have such great quality fixtures in such a concentrated period of time is fantastic. And with all the games being free, there’s a great chance for people to enjoy football throughout January and February.”

The football doesn’t stop on February 16 either - the very next week Blackburn Rovers take on Middlesbrough on February 23 in the Barclays U21 Premier League.

And of course, February is also a big month for Leigh Centurions as they begin their crucial Kingstone Press Championship campaign against Bradford Bulls at LSV on Sunday February 15. Before that there are a further two friendlies against Keighley (Feb 1) and Oldham (Feb 8).

“It’s going to be a busy month, but this is what we built Leigh Sports Village for - to bring regular, top quality sport to the people of Leigh,” added Toon. “We’re really looking forward to some compelling rugby league and football.”
