Laithwaite Shield Final Leigh Legion 1 Standish St Wilfrid’s 3

This contest between Premier team Standish St Wilfs and Division Two giant killers Leigh Legion was an excellent affair.

But despite a brave fight by Leigh, it was Standish who took the spoils 3-1.

The early exchanges were pretty even and then on 21 minutes Legion drew first blood when Jamie Hardman fired in an unstoppable shot from 20 yards for a fantastic goal. Standish struck back minutes later and it was all square as Duncan McPhail netted from close range. Half time arrived with honours and scores even.

The second half was only three minutes old when disaster struck Legion with a bizarre goal to McPhail: free kick some 30 yards out moved slowly towards goal and somehow rolled over the line. But the Legion lads wouldn’t lie down and a truly magnificent 75 yard run by James Dooley should have produced a goal but the shot blasted over.

As time ran out Legion poured forward to look for the elusive equaliser but sadly it was Standish who clinched the old shield when Johann Du Toit headed in from a corner. Du Toit ( son of ex - Wigan RL favourite Nicky) was named Man of the Match and received the Bob Valentine Memorial Trophy.
