Harriers claim team medal

Leigh Harriers were team medal winners at the Greater Manchester Road Relay Championships at Stockport’s Woodbank Park on Saturday.

Silver medals went to the boys under 13 team in the 3 x 2600 mts relay; Ben McLaughlin lead the team running the first leg in a time of 8:58 and maintaining 2nd place, Kyle Jones kept the team position with a time of 9:02, then on the third and last leg Josef Short ran a good anchor in a time of 9:15 winning the team county silver medals. Leigh’s B team of Billy Joe Blain 9:50, Shea Mellor 9:58, and Elliot Livingston 9:54, all ran well finishing 2nd B team.

In the under 13 girls race Keely Hodgkinson ran the fastest time of the day running 9:01 giving Leigh a convincing winning lead on the first leg; Grace Newton ran an outstanding second leg keeping the team in third place 10:24, on the third leg Joanna Smith found herself on a very fast last leg quickly becoming isolated she bravely battled on finishing in eighth place 11:01.

More medals for the team in the under 15 boy’s 3 x 2600mts race. Jacob Briscoe set the team off on the first leg finishing in 8:47 in 5th place. Ethan Jones ran a storming leg running Greater Manchester’s fastest time of the day 8:13 to bring the team into 2nd place; Kristian Wade ran a competitive leg holding on to 3rd place in a time of 8:48 to win county bronze medals. Leigh were first B team in the race with Joseph Wane 9:15 on the first leg, Ben Livingston 9:10 on the second leg and Connor Patterson 9:29 on the third leg.

Leigh Harriers senior ladies team also won bronze medals in the 3 x 3500m. Sarah Griffiths lead the team off on the first leg finishing in second place in 13:38. Louisa Thompson ran a well-judged leg holding the team place 13:58, and Leah Peploe in her first race of the season ran well for the team to come home in third place 15:10. Leigh’s B team were in 4th place, Shannon Johnson 19:26, Georgina Leck 14:53 and Ursula Mellor 17:40.

The under 17 girls’ team gave a good account of themselves finishing in 6th place; Olivia Stone 11:00, Eleanor Bond 10:28 and Emma Cartwright 11:31.

The senior men’s team found the competition very tough in the 4 x 3500 mts race; Liam Moore 12:12, Phil Williams 12:06, Alex Urmston 13:12, Darren Smith 14:01. The team finished in 9th place.
