Leigh East 58 Heworth 6
East comfortably progressed to the second round of the Carnegie Challenge Cup against NCL Div 2 strugglers Heworth.
It took only two minutes for full back Andrew Groves to cross for the opening try, Adam Holland converting for his first of nine goals from 10 attempts. Five more tries followed before the break, from Danny Kilshaw, Steve Ormisher, Simon Warhurst, Jonno Smith and Adrian Dootson as East tore through the York teams defence to give East a 36-0 lead at the break.
Further tries by Mark Kay, Steve Ormisher and a brace from Mark Ballard put East 58 points up before Heworth scored a deserved consolation try with seven minutes remaining.
East should have played Wigan St Pat’s but as they are playing a Challenge Cup match, Saturday’s fixture provided by the National Conference League is Leigh East v East Hull
Back in September East Hull gave Leigh East a reality check by beating the newly crowned NCL Champions 40-6. The Leigh lads are still stinging from that hammering and look to make amends on Saturday, ko 2.30pm.
