Another one in the bag

Tyldesley’s fantastic season came to a close, as they recorded yet another superb victory against quality opposition that had only lost four games before this tough and physical but very entertaining contest.

Although the home side had to withstand some very intense pressure early on, making this win even more rewarding, given the home line was only breached once.

The North East boys threw everything at the Lancashire lads from the off, constantly battering the Tyldesley line in a very one sided opening 15 minutes but great defending by Weaver, Prendergast and Gaskell held firm none more so than Norton’s massive hit on his own line that prevented a certain try.

Still Darlington came, but yet again Tyldesley somehow held out via Rushton, Lloyd, Guest, Long, Mennell, and Vose. A great tackle from Unsworth had the visitor’s loose possession with fisher kicking on, putting the hosts on the front foot, for the first time, with Gillbanks giving them an unexpected 3 pt’s lead, after a converted penalty a minute later.

Tyldesley surprisingly extended their lead in the 17th minute, after a great break from inside his own half saw Slater beat several defenders then superbly off load to the supporting Fisher who touched down for a great try, leaving Darlington some what shell shocked. Quick and good ball from Molyneaux gave Long, Guest, Bowes, Fisher and Vose time on the ball, putting the visitors in control. Another penalty, converted by Bowes gave Tyldesley an 11 point lead in the 26th minute.

With the first half coming to a close good hands from Molyneaux, Long, Guest and Bowes saw Fisher cross for a very good team try, Bowes converted. Half time 18-0.

Sloppy defence and poor concentration allowed Darlington to gain valuable yards towards the home line, and finally cross for a good but unconverted try at the start of the second half. The visitors once again came back strongly and could have increased their points but for some brave defending by Unsworth, Pollard, Vose, Fisher, Slater and Weaver.

Despite there being many opportunities for both teams, fierce defending prevented any tries. With five minutes remaining Tyldesley put some excellent play together, Gillbanks, Morgan, Prendergast, Norton and Rushton linked well, Lloyd then shipped a good ball out to Long who supplied Guest a great pass, for Bowes to go in for another good team try, Gillbanks added the extra two from the touchline too secure a much deserved win against a very good side.

Tries: Fisher 2, Bowes; Conversions: Gillbanks 1, Bowes 1 Penalties: Gillbanks 1 Bowes 1.
