Leigh Centurions have snapped up prop forward Tom Spencer from Wigan Warriors.
The 22-year-old has been at the Centurions on dual registration for the past two seasons, but has now put pen to paper to be a Leigh player for the vital 2014 season.
With promotion and relegation being introduced at the end of the campaign, Leigh have been looking to improve and increase their squad in time for the New Year’s campaign, and Spencer is typical of the powerful and skilful young player that they want to recruit with a view to the club’s long term future and ambitions.
The young forward has been an integral part of Paul Rowley’s squad for the past two years and the Leigh coach is delighted to get his man.
“Whatever Tom is rated fees-wise, he is worth double that because of his attitude on and off the field,” said Rowley. “He is loved by the fans and the players and it is no wonder because he is 100 per cent committed on the field and great to have in the dressing room.
“He really is a popular signing and his deciding to commit his future to Leigh speaks volumes for the way he feels the club is heading.
“He brings a lot to the pack in his fearless go-forward and powerful defence and he has really made his mark in the Championship this season. Plus his Super League experience will be invaluable too.
“There was a great deal of interest in him, including from a Super League club.”
