Leigh will go into the play-offs missing two key forwards.
Tom Spencer’s season was ended by a knee injury against Swinton last Sunday and now second rower Tommy Goulden has revealed he needs a hip operation.
“It is a blow to lose two players of their quality within a week,” said Centurions coach Paul Rowley.
“Tommy has been outstanding since joining the club and his performances have earned him a full-time contract for 2015.
“Tom showed great desire to win his place back and was willing to clock up minutes in the reserves. He was back to his best against Featherstone and Swinton and to lose him now is a huge disappointment.”
One consolation for Rowley is that he is not short of options in the forwards with several players desperate to earn a shirt ahead of the play-offs including recent signing Jonny Walker who is waiting to make his senior debut.
“If this happened last year it would have left us really thin on the ground,” said Rowley. “This year our squad is bigger and there is competition for places, especially in the forwards.
“It is disappointing to lose Tom and Tommy but equally it offers someone else an opportunity.”
Leigh’s players have been given some time off over the Challenge Cup weekend but return to training on Tuesday. They then play Workington on Saturday in the Heritage Day fixture which is the final home league game of the season.
+ Leigh have awarded a full-time contract to second rower Anthony Bate for 2015.
