East go close to an upset

Leigh East 1st 18 Kells 18

Leigh East shocked the NCL Division 2 leaders Kells but if only a last gasp drop goal went over East would have been celebrating a win.

The visitors that took the lead on 16 minutes when Daniel Joyce went over in the corner after 10 minutes of pressure on the East line, goal converted by Ross Gainford.

The Cumbrians extended their lead on 36 minutes after a well worked move down the left edge and Tyrone Dalton was in support to score, Gainford converted.

The second half belonged to the hosts though and they started with a bang as Chris Penn went over after quick thinking from Anthony Murray on the short side.

Adam Holland converted to bring the scores within sixpoints but minutes later the scores were level when Gavin Hunter intercepted a long pass to go in under the posts from 60 metres out, Holland converted.

Kells were the next on the score sheet when Ian Lewis tried to offload in the tackle and the ball fell to Ryan Watson to sprint away from 65 meters and with Dominic Wear’s conversion it was back to a six point ball game.

East weren’t finished there. They fought back in true East fashion once again to prove the doubters wrong by Murray going over and with Holland’s Conversion put the scores level with 10 minutes to go.

East had a chance to nick the game with just a couple of minutes but it wasn’t to be.

Craig Wingfield got the biggest cheer of the day when the Man of the Match was announced as he was East’s best player.

Wigan St Judes 2 Leigh East U7s 6

East came out confident from last week’s win, defensively they all work hard to push St Judes back to force the turnover on numerous occasions.

In attack some outstanding runs were made making the man of the match a difficult choice. Tries from Broady (3) Finn (2) and Luke . The parents’ man of the match was Luke.

Leigh East U8s 3 Hindley 3

Hindley scored first in a close game with 2 evenly matched sides quickly followed by a east equaliser.

Both sides played well completing there sets of six then defended well to make it a close game. Tries from Dylan Gregson, Josh Hopkins and another from a Hindley player on loan to East.

Langworthy 8 Leigh East U10s 3

East started off slow giving Langworthy an early lead but a much improved 2nd Half with 3 tries from Joshua Richardson and excellent leadership from Ben Penkywicz.

Leigh East U11s 28 Leigh Miners 18

In the eagerly awaited local derby, Leigh East emerged victorious.

The first try came early in the match with Leon Molyneaux going over with Taylor Pemberton adding the extras.

Successive sets seen the arm wrestle continue with strong runs from the forwards edging field position in the favour of East.

Intelligent play by the backs saw Pemberton kick the ball through Miners line of defence collected well by Jordan Fishwick to score.

Miners pushed back hard into the game but a solid try line tackle from Ryan Barnes saw East stand firm.

A final try came from an interception by Adam Jones who ran half the pitch to score. This topped off a fantastic overall team performance leaving East with the spoils.

Hindley 24 Leigh East U13s 4

East had opportunities galore in a game that just didn’t go their way on a heavy pitch, Jack Hamer was East’s try scorer.

Wigan St Pats 22 Leigh East U14s 4

East were on the wrong end of the scoreline against a well drilled Pats team, East need look for some positives after the poor showing, Easts try from Ryan Horne.

Wigan St Pats 10 Leigh East U15s 46

East carried on with their unbeaten start to the season after a convincing win over a spirited St Pats team. Tries from Brad Whelan (3), Danny Surridge (2), Lewis Cozens, Dale Whitworth, Corey Hamer with Whelan kicking seven goals. Leigh Miners 14 Leigh East U16s 26

East again take the spoils in the derby after a dominant performance that saw East fly into a 22-0 lead before letting Miners back into the game, East finished the job wellwith tries from Ross Webster (2), Ryan Gray, Ben Williams, Josh Woods, Jordan Hellam with Woods kicking a goal.
