Whelan must apologise

I AM responding to your front page article “The Malky Way” WEP 20th Nov regarding the appointment of Malky Mackay as the new manager of Wigan Athletic.

This is following the intervention of Wigan’s MP Lisa Nandy who rightly expressed concern about the appointment.

Mr Mackay is under investigation by the footballing authorities for allegedly making sexist, homophobic and racist remarks of an anti-Semitic nature.

Sexism against women, racism and homophobia is simply not acceptable in any part of society and football is no different. The anti-racist football charity Kick it Out also expressed concern about the appointment.

For Mr Whelan to describe Mrs Nandy as not understanding football because she has been “imported” “is not a Wigan girl by the way” is completely ridiculous.

Mrs Nandy was right to express concern about this important appointment for the town as she is the town’s democratically elected MP, especially when the appointment brings with it discrimination, racism and prejudice.

“Mr Wigan” should assign himself to an equalities course, take Mr Mackay with him and publicly apologise to Mrs Nandy.

“Mr Wigan” on this occasion has let the town, himself, Wigan Athletic and football down.
