Union above board

I am writing in response to the letter “Review scheme for teachers” (Letters, September 19).

While the author recognises the need for teachers to be released from teaching for union duties, they go on to quote alleged examples of people in the NUT inappropriately claiming Facilities Time.

As the NUT Division Secretary for Wigan, I am somewhat confused by these examples. I am employed as a teacher at a school in the borough, and am released by the school to carry out my union duties in accordance with the law and local agreement.

There are no NUT representatives in Wigan claiming Facilities Time as described by the author of the letter.

I am grateful for the opportunity to clear up any misperception around the NUT’s use of Facilities Time in the borough.

Max Atkins,

Divisional Secretary,

Wigan NUT
