Selfless work of volunteers

ON behalf of the patients, families and staff at Wigan and Leigh Hospice I would like to take the opportunity during National Volunteers’ Week to thank all of our volunteers for their support and invaluable commitment.

The Hospice has an army of more than 800 volunteers who we count on every day to run our 14 shops or support us within the Hospice on the reception desk, in our Day Hospice, on our inpatient ward, with fund raising and more.

Wigan and Leigh Hospice is embedded in the community and relies on the goodwill and passion of local people and I am proud that so many choose to assist in this way.

By volunteering local people strengthen and complement the work of the Hospice and enable us to extend our care to even more patients and their families living with life-limiting conditions throughout Wigan and Leigh. We measure their financial impact as close to £1m every year, which demonstrates just how vital their services are to the Hospice. In fact even with their help we need over £4 million every year to continue our work.

However, it is difficult to put a figure on the value of our volunteers as they often go above and beyond to provide such a high quality service. I believe they are the cornerstone of the Hospice and as such are priceless.
