Pickles may spite council

I SEE the campaigners responsible for trying to saddle Atherton with a town council have now decided to take their battle to Whitehall.

I just do not understand what this extra layer of local government will achieve.

Given the low turn-out, which should in itself suggest that the idea is far from popular, the so-called “parish precept” which gives the town council funding power will have to be very low or taxpayers will be up in arms.

What is another group of parish councillors allocated a few pennies and some loose change going to achieve that the excellent network of charities, community groups and third sector organisations cannot?

Hopefully this idea will be thrown out but given Mr Pickles’ tendency to bash the civil service regardless of the merit of anything they say the idea will probably be approved just to spite Wigan Town Hall.
