Disaster must be remembered

I WAS privileged to attend the march and service in memory of the victims of the Golborne Pit Disaster.

The atmosphere was sad and the loss still palpable, but determined that the lives lost 35 years ago would not be forgotten.

This act of remembrance is typical of a mining community, who turned out in huge numbers.

For whilst their families and their fellow miners will never forget, sadly the collective memory fades with the passage of time.

So it’s good that the anniversary is marked by an event such as this, and it’s proper that people are reminded of the price these brave men paid.

Well done to all concerned!
