Young people speaking out

YOUNG people from across the area have been taking part in a debating competition.

Topics at Westhoughton Rotary Club’s Youth Speaks competition included the topical ‘Illegal Drug Use: What the Olympics can teach us,’ which was discussed by Westhoughton High School’s winning Intermediate team of speaker Jason Goodacre, chairperson Natasha Leech and Romana Harrison, proposer of the vote of thanks.

Jason spoke of how doping of athletes dated back to ancient times.

Other teams and topics were St Joseph’s RC High School - ‘Religion is not the opium of the people’ - chairperson Georgina Thomas, speaker Bryony Moore and vote of thanks proposer Laura Trott.

Westhoughton High School Senior - ‘Steve Redgrave – An inspiration to us all’- chairperson Lucas Arrona, speaker Charlotte England and vote of thanks proposer Sofie McPherson-Booth.

Margaret Cowburn, widow of Jack, presented the Jack Cowburn Memorial Cup to the Westhoughton Intermediate Team.
