LEIGH firefighters staged a waterside rescue to help a woman stuck on the bank of Pennington Brook in close to sub-zero temperatures.
Emergency crews were called to a part of the stream close to Winmarleigh Gardens and St Helens Road at 8.30pm on Monday.
The woman had been in the water but had managed to get herself onto the bank. That section of the brook has 10ft high walls on either side and firefighters were required to help the woman to safety. She was treated by paramedics at the scene.
Officer Simon Vaughan said: “The bank is 10ft down from the road so we needed a ladder to help her back up. Two firefighters went down to the bank to help her.
“It was near to freezing conditions so she was very cold and distressed. It is unclear at this stage why she was there in the first place.”
