MOTORISTS are facing two days of delays after a town centre road had to be shut due to a water leak.
Elliott Street in Tyldesley was closed at its junction with Mary Street following the discovery of the leak underneath the road on Friday.
The closure is expected to last until Saturday December 5.
United Utilities are working with Wigan Council and Greater Manchester Police (GMP) to manage the diversion and ensure the damage is repaired.
Drivers are being diverted down Hough Lane, along Manchester Road and along Prince’s Avenue and Astley Street to rejoin Elliott Street away from the affected area.
Wigan Council said the road closure had to be put in place for repairs to the road surface to ensure it did not have to be shut for longer in future.
Some motorists used social media to complain about the effect of the road closure, with one Twitter user on Friday afternoon describing the situation in Tyldesley as “traffic chaos”.
