Violent pistol robbery hoodies hunted

A CUSTOMER was hit over the head with a gun during a robbery at a local off-licence.

Detectives today appealed for witnesses to the violent crime which was carried out at the Food and Drink 4U shop on Green Street, Atherton, shortly after 9am on Saturday, April 14.

The man was inside, along with a lone member of staff, when two men burst into the shop wearing dark-hooded tops and with their faces covered.

One of the thieves was carrying a handgun, which he used to strike the man across the back of the head and then dragged him onto the shop floor. While he pinned the customer down, the other intruder went behind the counter and began to fill a light-coloured duvet cover with tobacco and cigarettes.

The member of staff was also threatened with violence and forced to open the till from which he stole more cash.

The pair fled, at which point the shop’s panic alarm was triggered. The customer followed the thugs out of the shop but was warned off when the gunman turned and pointed the weapon directly at him. They then fled out of sight towards Lord Street.

Stolen was cash along with a quantity of cigarettes, rolling tobacco and batteries. A number of these items were later found discarded.

Police are now appealing to anyone with information to come forward, and are particularly keen to hear from anyone who saw the offenders getting into a silver Ford Fiesta with a 58 plate which drove off towards Tyldesley Road.

Anyone with information should call Wigan CID on 0161 856 7352 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
