A FORMER soldier has excelled at his new profession coming top in a prestigious nationwide competition.
Dave Stott, who founded his own company Elite Tiling just over three years ago, was crowned Tile Fixer of the Year by the Tile Association at a glittering awards ceremony in Birmingham hosted by TV weather forecaster Emma Jesson.
Dave, from Tyldesley, joined the prestigious industry organisation around a year ago, having taken a tiling course after 23 years in the forces serving on duty in countries including Afghanistan, Bosnia and Northern Ireland.
Despite being comparatively new to the trade, Dave has already secured some prestigious clients, including several Manchester United footballers.
Dave, 44, said: “When I left the Army I wanted to work for myself and be my own boss.
“I initially thought about bricklaying but that’s working out in all weathers and one wall is pretty much like another.
“I decided that tiling was something I could take some pride in doing because every room is different, so I took a course and started designing patterns.
“The awards ceremony was quite nerve-racking. Seeing as I was walking the streets of Afghanistan five years ago I’ve come a long way in a short space of time, and to win it makes me feel both humble and very excited.”
Dave was nominated for the Tile Association Awards by Stoke-based company Building Adhesives and helped by some of his clients who allowed him to take photographs of his work in their homes for his portfolio.
