A POPULAR community swimming pool has moved a step closer to safety.
A business case from community-coalition The Phoenix Group, including councillors and business people to keep the Hindley baths site open, was approved by Wigan’s cabinet last night.
The Borsdane Avenue site was identified for closure in 2011 as part of a £6.4m council cuts package.
But this takeover by residents will save the town hall £97,000 a year as well as guaranteeing a future for swimming sessions.
Phoenix is proposing operating the pool from February 2013 and officers from the council and current managers Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust will now engage in a round of intensive talks to make sure that the handover goes as smoothly as possible. Officers have commissioned a study of how the changeover would affect pool users.
Coun Chris Ready said: “I am delighted the pool is to stay open. I want to thank the Phoenix Group, who have prepared a good bid.”
