THESE dramatic pictures show the moments firefighters tackled a blaze which destroyed a car on the East Lancs Road.
The Ford Focus was engulfed in flames in the inside lane of the dual carriageway near Astley as the driver was making her way towards Manchester.
The incident at around 11pm on Friday brought the carriageway to a standstill, with tailbacks stretching almost a mile towards Leigh as motorists were unable to get past the flames.
The woman driving the Focus told fire crews she smelled smoke as she was driving and began pulling over but was forced to get out of the vehicle after spotting flames.
The firefighters’ work bringing the flames under control was recorded by motorist John Stirzaker who was at the scene.
The woman was unhurt but the car was written off. Police attended to supervise its removal from the road.
