SANTA’S little helpers have been working overtime to get a charity sleigh back on the road after it was targeted by a heartless yob.

The vandalism to Leigh Rotary Club’s float meant it was out of action on Tuesday evening but members now have it back on the road to fulfil its busy schedule and bringing festive cheer to hundreds of borough youngsters.

The incident, which took place near to midnight on Monday at Derby Street in Leigh, has now been reported to the police. The offender was disturbed during the act but managed to trash Santa’s sleigh, detaching speaker heads and pulling out electrical wires before running off.

A window on the towing vehicle was also smashed. Club secretary Brian Mills said: “We have no idea what he was looking for, perhaps he thought there was money left in it overnight. We have added an extra date - December 21 - for those children in Westleigh who missed out.”
