A LEIGH restaurant suffered smoke damage after its ovens set alight during evening service.
Fire crews were called to Bella Sardo on Bradshawgate at 9pm on Friday.
Customers, staff and residents from the flats above the eatery were all evacuated with officers praising the owners for ensuring everyone was safe.
A spokesman for GMFRS said: “Crews from Hindley, Bolton and Atherton attended. The ovens had set alight and there was smoke everywhere.
“The exact cause is not known but we think it could have been some residual fat setting fire to cardboard, maybe a pizza box, as it was quite acrid, black smoke.
“The people there did really well to get everyone out, so everyone was okay. There was just quite a bit of smoke damage inside.”
