Praise for ‘outstanding’ nursery

Staff at a borough nursery have been described as “excellent role models” by an education inspector.

Ofsted praised Brooklands Childcare, on First Avenue, Hindley, in a report published this week.

The nursery was judged to be “good” overall - the same rating given in 2013 - and it achieved the top mark of “outstanding” for personal development, behaviour and welfare.

Inspector Denise Farrington wrote: “Staff are excellent role models who make skilful use of daily routines to help promote children’s independence, physical well-being and understanding of healthy lifestyles.

“Children are sensitively and skilfully supported to recognise and respect the differences between themselves and others.”

The report said there were “exceptionally close bonds” between children and their key person, and staff were “extremely attentive”.

A local authority pilot programme had seen staff and parents work closely with other professionals to enhance their understanding of children’s behaviour.

There were “excellent partnerships” with professionals and parents were “exceptionally well supported” to provide information about what their offspring did at home.

The manager was described as “dedicated and enthusiastic” and, with staff, she considered the views of parents and outside agencies when planning future improvements.

The children’s communication, social and physical skills developed “well”, the report said.

Staff talked to children as they played, introducing new words to extend their vocabularies, and there were opportunities for them to recognise numbers and learn to calculate.

The inspector found staff developed their skills by attending training and there was “detailed monitoring” of children’s progress to allow the manager to identify any gaps in their learning.

The report said: “Children are independent and confident learners, who enjoy the challenge of new experiences. They help each other to solve simple problems and play well together, sharing and taking turns.

“Children learn how to hold a pencil and write the letters of their name.”
