A star-studded line-up of professional cyclists will ride on the borough as part of an exciting weekend competition.
Twelve international cyclists will be heading to Leigh Town Hall to compete in Street Velodrome, a touring event, which returns to the borough for the second year in a row from July 12-15.
The four-day series consists of a pop-up velodrome, with fast straights and steep banked corners, that tours the UK and Ireland looking for the fastest riders from all disciplines.
Each rider is on the same Viking single-speed road bikes, flat pedals and brakes, leaving the competition open purely to speed and skill alone.
They will be competing to win £500 in cash and an invite to the London Super Finals.
Round Two of the Viking Pro Series will also take place over the weekend from July 14-15, following an exciting first round in Dublin last month.
The weekend event will see big names such as Spanish BMX rider Sergio Layos, Italian fixed-gear racer Virginia Cancellieri, and Hungarian down-hill rider Csaba Csenge.
The Brits will be showing a strong field too, with MTB (mountain bike) endurance racer Jono Jones and current BMX World Champion Charlotte Green representing the male and female competition.
Charlotte, from Cornwall, won her first world title last month at the BMX World Championships in Azerbaijan.
The format is head-to-head pursuit-style knock-out racing, with two cyclists on the track at a time.
Following on from last year’s successful event, the travelling velodrome promises to “dazzle the public” with a thrilling display of cycle racing and famous names.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to try the track, with bikes and helmets provided for free and coaching by the professional riders. There is no age limit.
Event director Carl Thompson said: “We are delighted to be coming back to Leigh for the second year in a row and building on the local support for cycling.”
He added: “Now that some know what to expect, we can’t wait to welcome back familiar faces from last year and also introduce our event to new people.
“It’s really exciting to be helping to build a great cycling community in Leigh, Wigan and surrounding areas. We can’t wait!”
