POLICE in Wigan are appealing for witnesses to come forward after the windscreen of a police car was smashed.

Officers from the Wigan East Neighbourhood Policing team (NPT) were responding to a complaint on the Hag Fold Estate in Atherton at around 4pm on 8 September when they were informed that their vehicle had been damaged.

Upon returning to the car the officers discovered that its windscreen had been smashed but found no sign of the offender or the implement that had been used to cause the damage.

PC Chris Waddicar said: “This is an act of senseless vandalism that has targeted officers who were only trying to do their job.

“The damage that has been done to the car means that it will need to be repaired and therefore one less police car will be available to assist in keeping the streets of Wigan safe.

“We would urge anybody who may have seen the incident or has any relevant information about it to please come forward and contact the police.”

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
