Parliament pension protest

A LEIGH teacher presented Atherton-based MP Julie Hilling with a pension petition protesting at planned changes to the public sector pensions scheme.

Kate Penarski, who teaches at Bedford Primary School, handed Ms Hilling the petition at the House of Commons.

Union officials have been unhappy about the government’s desire to bring in higher pension contributions from all staff who earn more than £15,000 a year and these higher contributions are due to be phased in over three years from April 2012.

Ms Hilling said: “Whilst I accept the need for reform of public sector pensions, I am dismayed by the government’s handling of this issue and i hope both sides can reach a solution before the action planned for November 30.”
