MEMBERS of staff at a borough wide opticians have helped to raise more than £5,000 by doing a sponsored walk.

To mark Conlons Opticians’ 130th anniversary, employees from the 17 branches, including Leigh and Wigan, embarked upon a seven mile sponsored walk and raised more than £5,500 for North West Cancer Research (NWCR).

John Welsby, managing director of Conlons Opticians, said: “We wanted to mark our momentous year with a challenge and support a local charity so for every pound raised Conlons Opticians has matched the sponsorship.

“NWCR funds vital research projects to help us understand cancer so we are thrilled to have raised in excess of £5,500 and hope it will make a real difference.”

Anne Jackson, chief executive of NWCR, said: “Without fund-raising efforts like this, the charity would not be able to thrive and support the projects we do.

“Given the local incidence of cancer it is critical that the North West remains at the forefront of cancer research.

“I cannot thank the team at Conlons Opticians enough for their support.”

North West Cancer Research Incorporating Clatterbridge Cancer Research is made up of a merger between North West Cancer Research Fund and Clatterbridge Cancer Research.
