North Leigh jobs pledge

DEVELOPERS behind a large regeneration project claim their bid to transform a former brownfield site will help provide jobs for the young unemployed in Leigh.

The entrepreneurs backing the North Leigh project say their plans, which involve building around 1,800 new homes, a series of large industrial units, parks and nature reserves, will transform Leigh’s poor record of getting people into work.

If approved by Wigan Council, the development will create around 7,200 construction jobs and 1,300 permanent posts for the local community, for the next 10 to 15 years and they are also promising construction skills training and vocational courses for anyone looking to change career.

Backed by prominent Leigh figures, the plan is fiercely opposed by residents from the Save Our Borough campaign.
