SHADOW health secretary Andy Burnham claims a massive planned shake-up of Greater Manchester’s hospitals could ‘overwhelm’ the NHS.

Regional health chiefs want to set up a new system which could herald the end of the old district general hospital.

They want to introduce a network of care provided by local GPs, backed by specialist centres of excellence – regional super-hospitals with top consultants working around the clock.

Mr Burnham said he would only support the changes if a clear clinical need could be demonstrated.
