Firefighters have spent another night tackling grass fires across the borough.

Crews were called to several blazes overnight, including on Kenyon Road in Swinley and Bracken Road and Valentines Road in Atherton.

Grass was also alight on the bank of the canal behind the DW Stadium.

It is thought that around half of the fires were started deliberately.

A fire service spokesman said: "The grass at the moment is so tall and dry that people should take extra care if they are walking through.

"I don't advise people to have any camp fires or barbecues on grass."

Firefighters have been called to numerous grass fires in recent days as the heatwave continues.

But they also continue to tackle the massive moorland blazes at Winter Hill and Saddleworth Moor, meaning resources are stretched.

Recent incidents have included an abandoned camp fire on open land off Green Lane in Higher Folds, a grass fire at St Cuthbert's ARLFC in Norley and six fires in one afternoon at Wigan Flashes.
