A Tyldesley resident who was crowned tenant of the year shared her story with the Mayor over afternoon tea this week.
Marjorie Marsden, a Wigan and Leigh Homes tenant from Shakerley, won tenant of the year in July at the national TPAS awards 2015.
She has been a tenant of the Shakerley estate for more than 25 years and has made a huge difference in her community over that time.
Yesterday the Mayor of Wigan Borough, Cllr Susan Loudon, invited Marjorie to Wigan Town Hall to congratulate her on her award and to thank her for the work she does.
Marjorie is vice chair of Wigan and Leigh Homes board and a volunteer in her local community. Among her many roles, Marjorie helps run the community centre, organises a youth club for young people on the estate and runs the local Beavers Group. She is also the chair of the tenants committee and has worked extremely hard to secure funding for many improvement projects for Wigan and Leigh Homes tenants.
Marjorie said: “I guess you don’t realise all you do until somebody tells you. People say one person can’t make a difference but they can. You make a difference just by talking to another person. There is nothing worse than staying in the house all day – I always have something to talk about!
“I love listening to what people in the community say and I feel so passionate about it. I’m overwhelmed that I’ve put Wigan and Leigh on the map.”
The Mayor of Wigan Borough, Cllr Susan Loudon, said: “I’m incredibly proud of Marjorie and what she has achieved – she has done so well and is an inspiration to us all.”
