AN car passenger died as rush-hour traffic was brought to a standstill yesterday following a collision on a busy major road near Leigh.
The elderly man was travelling in a red Citroen Picasso that had collided with a lorry on the westbound side of the East Lancs.
Police closed the junction just after 4pm near to the Atherleigh bypass for a number of hours.
Firefighters and paramedics attended the scene to tend to the casualties.
Both drivers of the vehicles involved – have been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.
There were long tailbacks on both sides of the carriageway.
