THE OLYMPIC spirit arrived in Leigh with a group of torch-bearers leading a procession through the town to the LSV.
Four local community figures who carried the Olympic Torch as part of its journey around the country before the Games in London made their way from the town hall to the Leigh Harriers athletics’ track to mark the start of a Community Celebration Week.
The procession was met by the Mayor of Wigan Coun Myra Whiteside and her Consort John Hurst, together with hundreds of people who filled the stadium for the opening event of the week’s celebrations, a secondary schools’ track and field meeting.
The stadium was filled with an array of different national flags from around the world, and the athletics action was preceded by a cheerleading display and the national anthem.
The community week continues with a range of events, including free activities and taster sessions. For further details visit www.leighsportsvillage.co.uk or ring 01942 404983.
