SPORTY children will be able to renew traditional rivalries this year after primary schools formed their own sports group to organise competitions.
The future of school sport in Atherton had been in doubt after the School Sports Co-ordinator (SSCO) partnership ended when Hesketh Fletcher High School closed. But local teachers founded the Atherton Primary Sports Association (APSA) to ensure the competitions continued.
Eight schools are expected to take part in the majority of events with other schools interested in competing on an event-by-event basis.
The group will run 11 events in its inaugural year, beginning with a cross-country race for Years three to six pupils next month.
APSA leader Mark Grogan, Deputy Head at Parklee, said: “School sports bring a sense of community and everyone was very keen for them to continue and get involved.
“The children also love competing to build a friendly rivalry between schools.”
