THE Green Party has set up a Wigan and Leigh branch.
Members have long held meetings locally but only now have they decided to establish a full branch to challenge other parties locally.
The decision was taken at meetings at The Coven cafe in Hallgate and that is where the next gathering will take place at 7pm on February 21.
Co-ordinator Donald McQueen said the aim was to provide “a refreshing left-wing alternative to the Labour Party and the Liberal Democrats for local voters.”
And he said that it would be broaching several local issues, not least “unwanted” development projects which affect the borough’s population, such as the Leigh guided busway and the urban development of green spaces in the Pemberton and Winstanley areas.
The party says it will also support the South of M6 Action Group which is opposing development plans adjacent to the M6 at Winstanley.
