Golborne Hockey Club is celebrating after its men’s first team reached a first final in their 42-year history.
An emphatic 4-0 semi-final win over Rochdale put Golborne through to the showpiece Lancashire Trophy final against Morecambe.
Two penalty corner goals in the first 10 minutes of the semi-final – the first a deflected Tony Ormandy effort, the second a fine strike from skipper Gareth Edwards-Jones – gave Golborne the perfect start against a team who play in Division Five North of the North West Hockey League, one division above Golborne.
After 20 minutes, Golborne went 3-0 up, Pat Dixon scoring from a far-post cross, and with Edwards-Jones adding a fourth from the penalty spot before the break, the game was as good as won.
In the second period, the Golborne defence, superbly marshalled by goalkeeper Dougie Webster, kept Rochdale at bay.
Golborne face a tough proposition in the final, as Morecambe are currently joint top of Division Three. However, Golborne are a team on the rise, having secured two promotions in the last two years, and they are joint top of Division Six North.
The game will be played on Saturday, March 31, at noon at Blackburn Northern Sports Club.
This season is proving to be the most successful in the club’s history, having merged with Daten Ladies in 2009.
The Ladies’ first team is pushing for promotion in Cheshire League Division 1, while the men’s section now boasts three teams each Saturday.
The club runs training sessions, for men and ladies, on Tuesdays from 8pm at Golborne Sports and Social Club, Stone Cross Lane, Lowton, c
