A FORMER Winstanley College student has died after suffering a suspected allergic reaction while eating a meal at a restaurant in Manchester.

Shahida Shahid, who was studying maths at Manchester University after leaving the Wigan college last year, collapsed during a visit to Almost Famous in the city centre.

Shahid, 18, who lived in Worsley, was rushed to hospital after suffering the attack on Friday and was in intensive care for three days before she lost her fight for life on Monday.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said initial inquiries established Shahida had eaten at the Great Northern Warehouse restaurant prior to her collapse and may have suffered an allergic reaction to her food.

The force has now launched a joint investigation with the Food Standards Agency.

A GMP spokesman said: “At about 8.30pm on Friday police were called to Withy Grove in Manchester city centre following reports an 18-year-old woman had collapsed.

“The woman was rushed to hospital but she sadly died on Monday, 12 January 2015.

“Initial inquiries have established the woman had been out for a meal in the Great Northern Warehouse prior to her collapse and may have suffered an allergic reaction to her food.

“A joint investigation is currently underway involving Greater Manchester Police and the Food Standards Agency to establish the exact circumstances.”

A Manchester Council spokesman said: “We’re aware of a tragic incident which took place over the weekend and will now be working alongside Greater Manchester Police to establish what happened as well as preparing a report for the coroner.”

A Food Standards Agency (FSA) spokesman said: “An incident in Manchester involving a fatality potentially linked to an allergic reaction to food has been reported to the FSA and an investigation into the exact circumstances is underway.”
