Fire chiefs warned of flytipping after a large amount of household waste was dumped and set alight.
Crews were called to Crankwood Road, on Leigh, at 11.30pm on Friday after a big pile of food waste and letters was burning.
Crew Manager Mark Anderson said: “We warn people not to dump rubbish on land and set fire to it.
“There are registered waste disposal centres to take their unwanted items. We warn people to be on guard if they are paying someone to get rid of rubbish and to check they have a licence.
“If not, they could be paying someone who would drive to a local beauty spot and dump it there.”
