A LEIGH home has been completely destroyed after a blaze broke out in the early hours of the morning.

At around 1.30am on Wednesday firefighters were called to an address on Gorse Walk, Leigh, to reports of a fire.

Upon arrival, flames had spread throughout the property, and had completely gutted the living room.

The entire house was also ruined by heavy smoke damage.

Luckily, nobody was home at the time of the incident and there were no injuries reported, but residents in nearby houses needed to be evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Now police have launched an investigation after it was confirmed the blaze was started deliberately.

Detective Sergeant Neil Lawless said: “Fortunately no-one was in the house at the time, but it was a reckless act that put residents at a significant risk.

“Some homeowners were evacuated and I would like to thank them for their patience.

“If you saw anybody acting suspiciously in the area, or have any information that could help our investigation, please contact police.”

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
