A student has spoken of her surprise at making it through to the final of her first pageant and is now pulling out all the stops to win.
Kara-Jayne Ali, from Leigh, applied for the Miss Lancashire contest online and was delighted to find she had been chosen to battle it out for the overall victory.

The 20-year-old will compete in four dress rounds to lift the overall crown as well as raising money for children’s charity Variety and promoting the competition on social media and in newspapers.
Kara-Jayne, of Glebe Street, is hoping the eco-wear contest where participants must create a dress out of recycled materials will be particularly up her street she is currently studying environmental science at Edge Hill University and is very interested in issues of sustainability.
Former Astley St Mary’s RC sixth form student Kara-Jayne said: “I’m not too sure what made me enter.
“I had looked at the pageants online before but never decided to enter. I just wanted to do something new.
“I couldn’t believe it when I got through. I’m so excited to have this amazing opportunity, it’s fantastic.
“There are a few things we have to do. We’re raising money for Variety and the contestants have to do publicity, and you also have to make your dress out of recycled materials.
“Mine is going quite well but with all my events it’s hard to find time.”
Kara-Jayne and the other contestants will battle it out for the Miss Lancashire title on October 16 in Preston, with the winner gaining a place in the Miss England final which can be a springboard to international competition.
She decided to fund-raise for the charity chosen by the pageant organisers and is putting together a busy schedule of events.
She has already done cake sales and car boot events as well as received donations from family and friends and is currently putting the finishing touches to three events.
She took part in the Ormskirk 10k run last Sunday, held an afternoon tea party at Kingsleigh Community Centre in Leigh the day after and will next organise a family bingo night at the Botanical Gardens in Tyldesley on October 14.
