A suspected arson attack on a car on a residential street has been tackled by firefighters.

Severe damage was caused to a dark-green Ford Focus, which had been left in Brooklyn Avenue, Atherton.

Firefighters say they were alerted to the incident just after 5.30am today and used a hosereel jet and breathing apparatus to bring the fire under control.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said that a traffic community support officer had been drafted in to investigate.

The vehicle, which was gutted by the fire, was later recovered by a tow-truck.
