A COUPLE suffered severe burns after their car suddenly burst into flames on a main road in Leigh.

Fire chiefs and health and safety experts were today carrying out tests on the hybrid LPG-converted Range Rover to see whether some kind of mechanical fault was responsible for the horrific inferno in Leigh.

The victims - a 63-year-old woman and a 67-year-old man - have received emergency treatment at the specialist burns unit of Manchester’s Wythenshawe Hospital.

The latter’s condition was at first described as critical but it is understood that both patients have since rallied.

A witness told today how locals were alerted by a loud bang on Saturday morning.

The Range Rover had been travelling down Warrington Road in Leigh when it came to a sudden standstill and was then suddenly in flames.
