Check life on the inside

COULD you volunteer to go into prison?

Volunteers are needed to monitor the day-to-day life in prison and ensure that proper standards of care and decency are maintained as members of the Independent Monitoring Board (IMB).

IMB members are CRB checked, independent, unpaid except for expenses and subsistence allowance where appropriate and they meet once a month, with work spreading between three to four days.

Chris Rice, a board member, said: “You have a very serious position and role to play within the life of the Prison service, but you also get a huge sense of contributing to something not many people in the outside world – apart from staff and prisoners - ever get to see.”
