ARSONISTS set fire to caravans outside a garage in Atherton, causing £80,000 worth of damage.

Police are currently investigating a blaze at Atherton MOT Centre, in Kay Street, which started at 8.30pm on Sunday.

Two caravans, a transit van and a camper van, which were being stored there, were completely destroyed as flames ripped through the site.

Owner, Simon Eskins, 53, said: “Two expensive caravans, a motor home and a van, which I was storing for people have all gone up.

“There was also damage to a fence, a sign and the toilet and other vehicles nearby were affected by smoke damage but I am still able to carry on with the MOT centre.”

Mick Callan, watch manager for Leigh Fire Service, said: “Someone had deliberately set fire to one of the caravans, which spread to the others.

“Because of the propane gas cylinders, the police moved people back until we could get the fire under control, which took about an hour”.
