AN ASTLEY-based butchers has been sold for almost £4m.

Gabbotts Farm has been purchased by Yorkshire based Crawshaw Group.

The company operates 11 retail butchers units, including a factory meat mart attached to a small distribution centre.

It generated a turnover of £10.8m and a net income of £800,000 before group management fees and one off costs for the last financial year.

Crawshaw believe the acquisition will increase earnings immediately and provide it with access to customers in a new region in the North West.

They hope it will also produce potential for operational synergies to further enhance profitability.

Chief executive officer, Noel Collett, said: “This acquisition provides a well established retail portfolio and factory operation in a new geographical region which is an integral part of our expansion strategy and the start of our exciting journey of achieving 200 stores.

“Furthermore, the operational synergies and the new supply chain network can rapidly enhance sales and profitability.”

Gabbotts Farm recently celebrated 50 years of business and has grown to become one of the top five independent family butchers in the UK.

Their website says they are “famous across the North West for our rotisserie cooked chickens and hot food carvery.

“Gabbotts Farm also has an extensive range of fresh products including prime local beef, select local lamb, choice pork and poultry, Cheshire Oak back bacon, Award Winning Real Lancashire Black Puddings and our own Award Winning range of sausages. A full delicatessen counter with a large range of choice cooked meats, pies and sandwiches can also be found instore, probably the largest choice under one roof.”

Established in 1960, Gabbotts Farm was family owned and managed a chain of high street retail butcher shops with 10 stores located around Manchester and a Retail Cash & Carry in Astley.

In summing up Gabbotts Farm’s philosophy, John Molloy, Operations Director, says: “It`s quite simple really - our aim is to sell great food to our customers at affordable prices.

“Customer satisfaction is the key to our success, we strive to achieve excellence in everything we do to ensure that our customers have a great shopping experience each time they shop with us.”

Gabbotts Farm has stores in Ashton Under Lyne, Rochdale, Manchester Arndale, Hyde, Stockport, Stretford, Salford, Swinton, Chorley, St Helens and Meat Mart, Astley.
