Burglar told police “I’m sorry”

POLICE called to an empty home after neighbours heard hammering found floor boards removed and Peter Wadsworth hiding behind the bedroom door with a chisel in his hand.

The 25-year-old, of Westleigh Village Club in Westleigh Lane, Leigh, told the arresting officer: “You have caught me, I hold my hands up, I’m sorry.”

Wadsworth pleaded guilty to burglary with intent to steal from the home in Westleigh Lane when he appeared before Wigan and Leigh magistrates.

He was remanded on unconditional bail until April 14 for pre-sentence reports to be prepared.

Mike Ahearn, prosecuting, said that a neighbour had noticed the boarding on a ground floor window missing and heard suspicious noices inside.

Wadsworth told police he was considering stealing copper piping which could then be weighed in at a scrap dealers for cash.
